Artist Statement

We are conduits, our bodies and minds are flutes. Everything material is temporary and transitory. Painting liberates me to live in the present moment. The process of creating a painting is like being in connected to the correspondence between the micro and macrocosm; lila. I play with the material realm and celebrate the divine and infinite underlying spirit.

My aesthetic in painting is inspired by both post-impressionism and surrealism, in so far as, the expedited painting time, loose mark making, expressive use of color, dreams, and a curiosity about the illusory nature of reality. Iconography and concepts from eastern belief systems and ancient cultures, along with animals feature in some compositions. Ultimately, my work attempts to harmonize the material and the metaphysical.

Sculpturally, I enjoy creating ephemeral installations with organic materials, giving homage to earth art, body art and craft. I work with a variety of traditional and non-traditional mediums based on the concept I’m exploring.

Each artwork has a unique feeling to express. As I spend time working, I shift, I become the observer, watching relationships unfold in the composition, intuitively deciphering symbolism and deciding which relationships to highlight and which to hide in paint. Compositions emerge which I could not have anticipated and the work becomes an interplay of many layers of color, imagery and meaning. Wonder at the final outcome of an artwork feels the most authentic to me.

Visual Artist Statement…confusion

kaylee_michelle_art 4m This wasn't supposed to be a painting. The intention was to make something, maybe more of a collage, that catalogued or captured my visual language and all of my interests in order to assist in writing a verbal artist statement and better...
