Artist Statement

We are conduits. We are flutes. Everything material is temporary and transitory. Making art liberates me to live vibrantly in the present moment. The process of creating is like being connected to the correspondence between the microcosm and macrocosm; lila. My work plays with the material realm and celebrates the divine and infinite underlying spirit.

My aesthetic in painting is largely shaped by post-impressionism and surrealism, based on the expedited painting time, loose mark making, dream states and illusionistic nature of reality. “The essential is invisible to the eyes” a quote by Antoine de Saint Exupéry reminds me of the unseen creative process but felt, energetic imprint in a work that makes it magnetic. Some iconography from eastern systems of belief, ancient cultures along with animals surface in my paintings.  Ultimately, I paint in an attempt to harmonize the material and the metaphysical.

Sculpturally, I enjoy creating ephemeral installations with organic materials, giving homage to contemporary earth art and body art. I work with a variety of traditional and non-traditional mediums based on concept.

Each artwork has a unique feeling to express. As I spend time working, I shift, I become the observer, watching relationships unfold in the composition, intuitively deciphering symbolism and deciding which relationships to highlight and which to hide in paint. Compositions emerge which I could not have anticipated and the work becomes an interplay of many layers of color, imagery and meaning. Wonder at the final outcome of an artwork feels the most authentic to me.

“La Otra Voz”

I painted this shelve thing about 3 years ago and just now I found out this poem was written by Tomas Segovia. This is an excerpt from "The Willow and the Spiral: Essays on Octavio Paz and the Poetic Imagination" by Roberto Cantu Paz's views on art and poetry,...
